Canaanite goddess of Venus, cognate of Ishtar. She is also known as Astarte, and the origin of Aphrodite. Her male counterpart is ʿAthtar, possibly a Pan-Semitic god who was known and worshipped in Mesopotamia, North Arabia, South Arabia and Canaan.
